From the immense steam clouds created by dynamic hot gushing springs, to the calming natural mineral waters that trickle throughout its colourful districts, Beppu town holds the fruits of the extraordinary beauty and power of nature. A companion to the international exhibition "Artgate Cruise", this exhibition "Waku Waku Konyoku (mixed bathing) Apartment" brings young emerging domestic artists to the fore through site-specific installations. Through works created in and installed in public parks and throughout the entirety of three early 20th century apartment blocks, formally a dormitory, this central component of the festival focuses itself around the artist residency programs and exhibitions involving up-and-coming young artists from different fields, and moreover, a large variety of cultural activities involving local people such as students from art clubs, crafts people and older residents of Beppu who love the culture of the Oita prefecture. Even after the official launch of the festival, we welcome you to join and participate in the Waku Waku Konyoku (mixed bathing) apartment project, working together to transform the apartment day by day. This is a unique place, one where an apartment building contains unexpected happenings and offerings, all of which are waiting for you. Let's take a bath together!
