A「No Matter (Women taking a bath)」

Concept , Direction and Choreography : Julie Nioche
Co-direction and Choreography : Takiko Iwabuchi
Dance: Julie Nioche (France) _ Takiko Iwabuchi (Japan)
Music : Alexandre Mayer, Alice Daquet

In her project "No matter" Julie an international dance artist who has performed in many parts of the world brings to Beppu dance informed by various elements from each of the countries climate she has visited, their sociological backgrounds and human history. Through her work Julie has collaborated with professional dancers and female dance composers who are active in each of the countries she has worked in.

Her projects to date include performances in Norway, Sweden, Morocco and Turkey working with the same intrinsic concept, and as such the "Matter'" series has gained her a solid reputation in each country she has worked in. Her Beppu project is a "Matter" co-production with Takiko Iwabuchi, one that has allowed Julie to express through dance her interest in Japan. Having previously lived in Japan, Julie was eager to develop a new "No Matter" dance work with the theme of hot springs; a work where two dancers and a singer face their own identity through contact with the natural mineral water of Beppu.

Drawing inspiration from one of Beppu's traditional hot springs and the Japanese relationship to hot spring bathing, and through the theme of water, two dancers from different cultural backgrounds transcend their own national and cultural identities. At first the female performer appears in clothes made of the paper. However, these clothes melt away upon touching the water, with the body itself becoming wrapped in hot spring steam. Through this warm steam, produced by hot water rising to the surface of Beppu from deep underground which does not disperse even in the cold of winter, human nakedness is removed as the steam forms a transparent skin of natural elements. The layers of our outer surface disappear. What is left is the image of a "Women taking a bath" who wore a skin of paper replaced by a steam of snow.
