
Born in 1951 in Tokyo.
Graduated from the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Kobe University and the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Yokohama National University.
Joined Regional Planning Team Inc. and participated in many development projects based on ecologically sound planning. Invited to take part in the temple construction project to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the foundation of Tochoji Zen Temple, located in Yotsuya, Tokyo. That led to the founding of P3 art and environment (http://www.p3.org/) in 1989 and his appointment as director. P3 utilized the temple auditorium as its main gallery space until 1999 and continued to produce and organize various art- and environment-related projects after being detached from the space.
Recent work includes positions as general director of the Tokachi International Contemporary Art Exhibition: Demeter (2002), general director of the Asahi Art Festival (2002-2008), curator of the International Triennale of Contemporary Art YOKOHAMA(2005), and general director of the contemporary art festival The Mixed Bathing World that will be held in Beppu, Oita in 2009.
Books authored include: This Nomadic Planet (Iwanami Shoten), A View from the Moon (Mainichi Shinbunsha). Translation works include Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth by Buckminster Fuller (Chikuma Gakugei Bunko), and The Self Organizing Universe by Erich Jantsch (co-translation, Kosakusha).
